Our Mission
For over 100+ years, The Fairview Church has existed to introduce people to the transforming power of Jesus Christ, anointed by the Holy Spirit, to proclaim, heal, free, and restore (Luke 4:16-21).
It is a real joy for us to meet newcomers! We say come as you are. You don’t need a manual to figure out how to join in worship with us, pray with us, and engage in our Sunday message. Just come and be a part. Jesus simply says: “Come to me” and we say the same!
What We Believe
Truth
The Bible is our ultimate guide and authority, the standard by which we live (2 Timothy 3:16)
Worship
We respond to the goodness and greatness of God by humbling ourselves before Him (John 4:23)
Community
Our love for God is proved true by the way we love one another (Hebrews 10:23-25)
Mission
Jesus came to proclaim, heal, free, and restore; so do we in His name (Luke 4:16-21)
The following five principles make up the core theological non-negotiables of the The Fairview Church:
(1) Jesus is Lord, above all others, Son of God and Son of Man;
(2) the Holy Spirit is an active Person of the Triune God, able to fill us and empower us to do what we otherwise could not, in the pursuit of holiness;
(3) the Church of God is called to be a catalyst for the unity of the Body of Christ;
(4) the Great Commandments (to love God with our whole selves and others as ourselves), identified by Jesus as the sum of the law and the prophets; and
(5) the supremacy of the Holy Bible: we are a people of the Word, knowing it to be the supernatural measure of all faith, conduct, and practice.
We believe in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son.
We believe in the virgin birth.
We believe that Christ was crucified and buried and that on the third day He rose from the dead.
We believe that He rose up into heaven and sits at God’s right hand and from this position He shall come to judge all people.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection of the body.
We believe in His Word, that it is both perfect and without error, the final authority on all matters of faith and practice.
We believe that every person who has accepted Christ’s forgiveness is a member of the church of God.
The Fairview Church of God, was established in 1906 as the “Church of the Living God” in Seattle by the founding Pastor; Pastor James Bamford. A church building was added in 1925 and eventually became the “Woodland Park Church of God.” Many wonderful pastors and leaders have led the church mission of sharing Jesus with Seattle.
The church has always had a history of reaching out to the community. December of 1984 became known as the Miracle on 78th Street. After the purchase of the Seattle Fairview School building the entire congregation gathered at 78th and Roosevelt, the Fairview School, and surrounded the building and prayed. Prayed that the church body would be good stewards of the building and to be used for ministry.
In 1985 the church opened The Fairview Church and School. Many wonderful missions, pastors, college presidents, and missionaries have come from Fairview’s congregation to reach out and serve others. Isaiah 64:8, “O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” The Fairview Church desires for God’s light to shine from the building to all of Seattle.
With Fairview’s rich history the church looks forward to a bright future.…it is just beginning for Fairview! We are excited about all the things God has done, but more importantly we are excited about all the things God is going to do.
Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.”
We are a light on a hill in Seattle. Jesus is the subject!
Historical Building
The Fairview building, spanning over 45,000 square feet, was originally a Seattle public school founded in 1907 called “Fairview”, appropriately named for its spectacular views of Green Lake, Lake Washington, Mount Rainier, and the Cascade Mountains. Fairview’s original eight rooms held grades 1-7.
The Fairview School closed in June 1978 when a new location was opened for the growing school. After a bid from the Pacific Northwest Ballet fell through, the building was sold to the Woodland Park Avenue Church in 1985, which respectfully changed its name to The Fairview Church.
Much has evolved since then and Fairview is blessed to be the home of The Fairview Church, The Fairview Child Center, and a host site for various events and activities.

Global Connection
The Fairview Church is part of The Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) which is a global movement of people seeking to fulfill God’s mission in the world. We’re committed to studying the Word of God and faithfully living it out. We’re committed to the mission that Jesus Christ gave every believer: to make disciples of all nations (Matt 28:18–20).
To me, going to church should be about being involved with your faith and community, not just dressing up, sitting back, then getting on with the rest of the week. I feel involved in both my faith and community with Fairview, between feeling challenged to live my faith on a daily basis and by volunteering in various ministries with them.
I was first introduced to an amazing faith-filled couple from The Fairview Church through an evangelical ministry with which we volunteered together. The husband invited me to visit his church family, though I was unclear about the name and location. I walked into The Fairview Church, after being out of touch with him for nearly 3 years, saw his familiar face and my family has since been welcomed in and attending this historic and rich Fairview Church Family.
There is no better place to be on a Sunday morning than Fairview. For over 33 years, we have been blessed to have Fairview friends we regard as family. In the many challenges of life, this spiritual family is always ready to offer prayer support, encouragement, faith, and humor.
